Some Points on SEO

SEO is the acronym that internet-types like me use in place of Search Engine Optimisation. It's about moving a website up the rankings of a particular search engine using non-paid advertising methods.


There is alot of work involved in having a site rank well for chosen keywords or key phrases and the goal posts are always moving. Google, the most popular of the search engines, is constantly tweaking the algorithm it uses to rank sites.


Google keeps working on its algorithm to make sure they return the most relevant results to a search queries.
Contrary to popular belief, cheating the search engines by using shady methods (known as black-hat SEO) isn't a sure fire way to shoot up the rankings. Most of the time you will see an improvement, then the site slides the other way or it it is removed all together by Google as punishment.

 


Some things that influence where you rank in the search engines are:

  1. CONTENT - A good amount, regularly updated and relevant to the rest of your site.
  2. INBOUND LINKS - These are links from other websites to yours. They should be from a site that is relevant to yours. 
  3. AGE OF THE SITE - If a site has been around since '99 it should have some meaningful info.
  4. ONSITE SEO - The title, meta-tags, description, content and images on each page should all tie in to a central key phrase.
  5. HITS - Obviously, the more hits you get the more popular your site is. Google recognises this but they can also spot 'paid' clicks a mile off. By adding your domain name to all of your stationery and running web-only promotions you will see a healthy rise in unique hits.
